Anti-Bullying Program
BULLY PREVENTION AT CES
Central Elementary School cares about the safety and well being of our students. It is our goal to provide a safe bully-free place for your child to learn. To accomplish this goal, we utilize an anti-bullying program called the Olweus Bully Prevention Program.
The Olweus Bully Prevention Program (OBPP) is one of the best-known bullying prevention programs in America. The OBPP is designed to improve peer relations and make schools safer, more positive places for students to learn and develop.
The goals of the program include:
- Reducing existing bullying problems among students
- Preventing new bullying problems
- Achieving better peer relations at school
- Work with both the bully and the person being bullied
Schools across the country and around the world have experienced positive results from the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.
Teachers will hold class meetings and give DVD presentations to help your child identify bullying and methods to properly deal with it. At the beginning of the school year, class meetings will be held weekly or bi-weekly. By mid-year the class meetings are scaled back to one per month or on an as needed basis.
Parents and guardians play a key role in this program. Your child will be asked to tell an adult at school or at home if he or she is being bullied or sees bullying happening at school. Our CES staff members are trained to deal with bullying situations when told about them. It is very important that you take any bullying seriously and let our school staff know if it is taking place.
Bullying should not be seen as “kids being kids” or something that students just need to deal with. Having a safe school experience is something that all students should be able to enjoy.
Our OBPP Committee has developed a rubric to outline Central Elementary School rules and consequences. You will find the rubric and description on our school website.
Students may pick up Anonymous Bullying Incident Forms from their teacher. Students are asked to identify the bully, describe what happened, and where the incident took place on the form. Students should then place the completed form in the locked drop box outside of the guidance office. Only Mr. Retcher and Mr. Niese have access to the completed forms. Mr. Retcher or Mr. Niese will then talk privately to the person reporting the incident and the person doing the bullying. The Bullying Behavior Rubric will be used to help deter bullying in the future.
If you have any questions about the program, please call your child’s teacher, guidance counselor, or the Principal. Please reference the attached Anti-Bullying Rubric.
